Weston Olencki uses their music to explore the “non-linear relationships and unexpected resonances between experimental sound, geography, historicity, and (mostly American) musical traditions”.
For van Horen Zeggen, Olencki will perform on banjo, outfitted with “solenoid motors, transducers, radio transmitters, handmade electronics, and custom software.” All elements (whether field recordings or materials) are sourced directly from the American South where Olencki was raised. As words only can convey so much, please have a listen to Old Time Music (2022) or Pearls Ground Down To Powder (2024)—on which Olencki employs their particular electromechanical banjo set-up. Weighted with history and nostalgia, yet ‘hot-rodded’ to futuristic possibilities. Olencki creates a futuristic, precision-machined form of Americana. A form of the genre that (un)diggs and (un)dusts links and chains between experimental music, traditional music, contemporary audio tech, obsolete audio tech, artificial intelligence, oral knowledge, alternative pasts and alternative futures.
